Abstract

The objective of this study was to investigate the antioxidant activity of Gloriosa superba leaves against carbon tetracholoride (CCl4) induced hepatotoxic model. The plant materials were dried in shade, powdered with help of hand grinder and extracted with alcohol. Preliminary phytochemical test shows the presence of Alkaloids, Carbohydrates, Tannins, Amino acids and Flavanoids. The alcoholic extract of Gloriosa superba (AEGS) showed a significant dose dependent (250 mg and 500 mg/kg p.o.) antioxidant activity. The degree of antioxidant activity was measured by using serum biochemical parameters like hepatic antioxidant enzymes like SOD, CAT, GPX and LPO. AEGS at a dose level of 250mg/kg and 500mg/kg produce significant (P<0.001) antioxidant activity by decreasing the level Malondialdehyde, while it significantly increased the levels of glutathione peroxidase (GPX) , superoxide dismutase (SOD) and Catalase activity (CAT) in a dose dependent manner. The effect of AEGS was comparable to that of standard drug Silymarin.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to investigate the hepatoprotective activity of Tamarindus indica seeds against thioacetamide induced hepatic damage in rats. The plant material were dried in shade then powdered and extracted with methanol. Preliminary phytochemical tests were done. Methanolic extract of Tamarindus indica seeds showed presence of phenolic compound and flavanoids. The degree of protection was measured by using biochemical parameters like serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (SGOT), serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase (SGPT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), bilirubin (BRN), and total protein (TP). Alteration in the levels of biochemical markers of hepatic damage like SGOT, SGPT, ALP, Bilirubin and total protein were tested in both thioacetamide treated and untreaed groups. Thioacetamide has enhanced the SGOT, SGPT, ALP and bilirubin and decrease Total Protein level in liver. Treatment of methanolic extract of Tamarindus indica seeds (500mg/kg) has brought back the altered levels of biochemical markers to the near normal levels in the dose dependent manner. Our findings suggested that Tamarindus indica methanol seeds extract possessed hepatoprotective activity. Silymarin was used as reference standard.

The objective of this study was to investigate the hepatoprotective activity of ethanolic extract of Strobilanthes asperrimus leaves against Thioacetamide induced acute hepatotoxicity. The plant materials were dried in shade then powdered and extracted with alcohol. Preliminary phytochemical tests were done. Ethanolic extract showed presence of phenolic compound and flavanoids. The hepatoprotective activity of the ethanolic extract was assessed in Thioacetamide induced hepatotoxic rats. Alteration in the levels of biochemical markers of hepatic damage like SGOT, SGPT, ALP, Billirubin and Protein were tested in both Thioacetamide treated and untreated groups. Thioacetamide (100mg/kg s.c) has enhanced the SGOT, SGPT, ALP and Total Billirubin where decrease in total protein level in liver. Treatment of ethanolic extract of Strobilanthes asperrimus (500mg/kg) has brought back the altered levels of biochemical markers to the near normal levels in the dose dependent manner. Our findings suggested that Strobilanthes asperrimus ethanolic leaves extract possessed hepatoprotective activity. Moreover, it prevented Thioacetamide induced prolongation in pentobarbital sleeping time confirming hepatoprotectivity and validates the traditional use of this plant against liver damage.
